Event Description
Finding birth, marriage, and death records in the former Russian Empire and Soviet Union is challenging even for professional genealogists because these records are now scattered across many different countries, each with its own archival system and access laws. This presentation provides an overview of birth, marriage, and death registration systems from the Imperial period through the Soviet era to present day, examining how administrative changes and shifting borders impact research strategies. The presentation covers current locations of historical records, access restrictions, and practical strategies for obtaining documents.
