------

New York State requires notification of a decedent’s heirs-at-law as part of the probate process. Meeting the requirements of this law often means retaining a forensic genealogist who will research the decedent’s family and provide an affidavit of due diligence which names the interested parties. A similar process is often carried out when a decedent dies intestate, although in that circumstance, the heirs-at-law will also be distributees. Sometimes cases either start out with twists or develop unforeseen twists along the way. This webinar will consider several case studies whose research took an unexpected turn.

Debra Braverman has been a forensic genealogist for over twenty years, specializing in due diligence for probate and intestacy matters, locating remaindermen for trusts, and helping to clear real estate titles. She is qualified as an expert witness in seven counties in New York State and regularly testifies in the Surrogate’s Courts. She is a former member of the boards of directors of the Association of Professional Genealogists and the Jewish Genealogical Society, Inc. Debra is a member of APG, NGS, NYG&B, JGS, Inc (New York), and GSG. She has lectured on both the local and national levels.
