Event Description
Tech Exchange is a monthly study group sponsored by APG's Mid-Atlantic Chapter to help professional genealogists improve our research and workflow with new tools, or better master the tools we're already using. After all, we’re stronger and more knowledgeable when we work together.

In November, Mark Connelly will lead us in an "Introduction to QGIS for Genealogists."

Maps are a key tool for genealogists and historians to understand spatial relationships between people and how communities have developed over time. This talk will explain how QGIS, free and open source software, can help genealogists understand and visualize mapping information from multiple sources simultaneously. Basic GIS concepts and key data sources will be shared, and georeferencing will be demonstrated. The challenges of mapping land records will be briefly discussed, but is beyond the scope of this talk.

Mark Connelly is an independent programmer and researcher in the Philadelphia suburbs, having worked for the legal industry for over a decade. He started the Local Geohistory Project to track how local government has changed over time. Mark received a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Penn State in 2008 in French and Francophone Studies, German, and International Studies, and a Master of Science Degree in 2010 from Drexel in Library and Information Science.
