SUMMARY:Luis Ariel Rivera: Not American Enough: The Challenges and Beauty of Puerto-Rican Genealogy
LOCATION:
DESCRIPTION:Luis Ariel Rivera: Not American Enough: The Challenges and Beauty of Puerto-Rican Genealogy\n\n05/13/26 03:00 PM EST\n - 05/13/26 04:00 PM EST\Description:\nThis presentation is underwritten by the National Genealogical Society (NGS)\n\n\n\n\nPuerto Ricans have been American citizens for more than a century, yet their records and history are often overlooked or misunderstood in genealogical research. This session explores the rewards and challenges of tracing Puerto Rican ancestors, from American-created records beginning in 1910 to rich Spanish-era sources that support thorough, standards-based work, along with the many online and on-island collections that illuminate earlier generations. A personal case study, grounded in traditional records and DNA, demonstrates how Puerto Rico’s unique political status shapes both identity and the research process, while offering practical tools for navigating its rich and complex documentary landscape.  \Details:\nAbout the Presenter\nLuis has been researching his Puerto Rican roots since 2004, using DNA for genetic genealogy since 2010, and blogging since 2011. His research mainly revolves around various towns in Puerto Rico, the French territorial islands of Guadeloupe and Martinique, and various towns in Spain (specifically in Andalusia and Mallorca). His research has also taken him into other parts of the English, French, and Spanish Caribbean as well as South America and Europe.\n\nAs a professional genealogist, his goal is to help others connect and learn more about their ancestors. Exploring his own roots has allowed him to learn more about his cultural background and the movement of his ancestors. Through his research, I hope to provide similar knowledge for others as well.
